The idea
Family organisers usually fail for one reason: only one person uses them. FamMedley was designed the other way round, around what makes each family member want to open it, from points and rewards for the kids to a calm overview for the parents.
The challenge
Every parent knows the pattern: a shared calendar or chore chart starts strong and is abandoned within weeks, because one parent ends up doing all the updating. The kids never open it, so it becomes another thing to nag about.
FamMedley had to work for very different people at once. A seven-year-old who cannot type an email address, a teenager who will only open something that feels like their own, and parents who want the overview without more admin. And because it holds a family's life, it had to be private by default.
How we approached it
We designed around motivation rather than lists. Every task, photo and vote earns points; points climb a weekly family leaderboard; and every Monday the week's top earner is crowned family champion. Parents turn points into rewards that matter in their house, like choosing the film or a day off chores.
Each family member got a way in that suits them. Children sign in by scanning a code from a parent's phone, with no email or password. Meal planning works like swiping on cards, so even the youngest can vote on dinner. Parents see a calm overview and a weekly recap written by an assistant, based only on the family's own activity.
Shared lists had to be trustworthy, so changes appear on everyone's phone the moment they happen, and the app keeps working without signal in the supermarket and catches up when it is back online.
What we built
Chores as quests
Tasks for chores, homework and medication earn points, with streaks and a weekly family goal everyone reaches together.
Rewards that matter
A family store where points become real rewards set by the parents, plus decorations for your avatar.
Shared lists and meals
Groceries that sync live while you shop, with suggestions from the family's usual items, and meals the family votes on by swiping.
The family calendar
Appointments, countdowns and plans in one calendar, synced with Google Calendar so work and football practice sit side by side.
A private family space
Check-ins with photos and notes, comments and reactions, and a shared whiteboard for drawings and messages.
An assistant for the family
A weekly recap, trivia questions about the family's own week and ideas for things to do together, kept friendly and family-safe.
Kid-friendly sign-in
Children join by scanning a code from a parent's phone, no email or password needed.
Decisions that mattered
Make it a game, not a list
Points, streaks and rewards turn nagging into play. The organising happens as a side effect.
Private, not social media
Sharing stays inside the family, with no public feed and no strangers. Parents decide who joins.
Everything updates instantly
When one person ticks off the milk, everyone sees it straight away, which is what makes shared lists trustworthy.
Works offline
Changes made without signal are saved on the phone and synced when it reconnects, so nothing is lost in the supermarket basement.
Check-ins, not tracking
Children share where they are by checking in when they arrive, instead of being followed around the clock. Families get peace of mind without the battery drain or the surveillance.
Fair resets in every time zone
Weekly leaderboards, crowns and streaks reset at the family's own local midnight.
